Household Garbage Collection
HOW TO REPORT A MISSED COLLECTION
If any of your wastes are not collected on their scheduled day,
call 704-920-5555.
Do not call Allied Waste. The City tracks missed collections and will report your missed garbage, recycling or bulky waste collection to Allied Waste. Allied Waste has 24 hours from notification by the City to correct misses. If Allied Waste does not collect your material with 24 hours of notification, City crews will be dispatched to collect the material.
Preparing Your Garbage for Collection
Garbage and recycling collection is provided one day per week. Garbage and recycling are collected on the same day. Collections are made between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. If you are a new resident or unsure of your collection day, please call the Customer Care Center for assistance @ 704 920-5555. The roll-out containers furnished by the City of Concord are quite large and can easily hold a normal weeks worth of trash for a family of four when used in conjunction with a recycling container. Larger families may request an additional roll-out container from the City. Excess trash may be placed in a sealed plastic bag or boxed next to the roll out container. Large cardboard boxes must be flattened and placed next to the roll out container. Please place the roll-out container at least six feet from vehicles, mailboxes, trees, poles and other obstructions. Roll out containers may be placed at the curb after 5 p.m. the day before collection, but must be at the curb by 7 a.m. on collection day. Containers must be returned to your house by 9 p.m. the evening of your pick up. Please do not place loose trash in the roll out container. Bag and tie all trash within the container to minimize spillage and odor.
Items NOT ALLOWED in garbage containers:
Please do not place any of the following items in your roll out container:
Automated Routes
Some areas are collected by automated trucks (vehicles with a mechanical arm that grasps the can and empties it into the top of the truck). These vehicles can not collect excess trash outside the container. In these routes a second conventional type truck will circulate through the area and collect any extra trash. People living on automated routes should place their roll out cart with the handle facing away from the street. Failure to do so may result in cart breakage and debris spillage.
Special Items
YARD WASTE
The City of Concord collects all types of yard wastes. However, much of this material can be managed at home and beneficially reused by the resident. Utilization of mulching mowers for grass clippings and compost piles for leaves will yield healthier lawns, shrubs and gardens.
If you do not wish to manage your own yard waste, the City will collect the material on your normal refuse collection day.
- Brush and other trimmings should be stacked neatly next to the curb and should not obstruct the sidewalk or block storm drains.
- Branches and shrub trimmings should not exceed six feet in length and should be less than 12-inches in diameter/no longer than 6 feet in length, and leaves shall be placed in un-tied clear plastic or un-tied paper bio-degradable bags weighing less than 35 pounds each. Bagged materials are collected weekly on the scheduled waste collection day.
- Professional tree service and landscape contractors are responsible for the removal and disposal of all waste they generate.
- Un-bagged loose leaves are ONLY collected according to the published loose leaf collection schedule. Loose leaves placed at the curb before or after leaf collection season are a violation of City code and are subject to Code Enforcement and removal penalties of $150 or more.
Collection schedules are disseminated annually through direct mailers and newspaper articles. Due to volume and logistical challenges, loose leaves are normally collected from each area every 3-4 weeks. Bagged leaves are collected on a weekly basis on the same day as your garbage. Please see the Solid Waste Downloads section at the right of the page to download and view the Holiday Collection Schedule, as your collection day is subject to temporary change due to holiday operations.
Christmas trees are collected on the same day as your normal trash. Please remove all garland, lights, ornaments, tinsel and the stand prior to placing the tree on the curb.
APPLIANCES
Used appliances are collected on your garbage day each week on a scheduled basis. Please call 704-920-5555 to schedule removal of refrigerators, air conditioning units, stoves, dryers, dishwashers, water heaters, etc. These items must be placed at the curb, away from low overhead lines, parked cars, or other impediments.
BULK METAL
Bulk metal items such as old bicycles, swing sets, lawnmowers, etc. are collected on a scheduled basis. Call 704-920-5555 to schedule collection. Please be sure all fluids are drained from equipment. Disassemble large items such as swing sets.
USED TIRES
Used tires are collected on a call in scheduled basis. Please call 704-920-5555 and place your used tires at the curb following scheduling. Tires must be removed from rims. Rims may be collected separately as a bulk metal item.
BULK TRASH
Up to 10 cubic yards of bulky waste can be collected from each residence each week. Bulky items such as furniture, mattresses, televisions, carpeting (rolled and tied) and large boxes may be set out next to your roll out container on your normal trash day. This DOES NOT INCLUDE excess bags of garbage.
Bulky waste quantities larger than 10 cubic yards (the amount of material that could be contained in 10 roll-out garbage containers) is subject to curbside collection for a fee. To schedule and pay for the delivery of a roll-offcontainer for quantities larger than 10 cubic yards, call 704-920-5555. For more information on the disposal of large bulky waste piles, please see the Solid Waste Brochure, available online in the Solid Waste Downloads section at the right-hand side of this page.
RESIDENTIAL BUILDING MATERIALS
Residential building materials are collected on a scheduled basis. Please contact 704-920-5555 to schedule the collection of building materials.
- If proper scheduling procedures are followed, up to 10 cubic yards of building materials will be collected from each residence each week, at no charge. Larger quantities are subject to curbside collection for a fee or may be taken to the Cabarrus County Landfill on Irish Potato Road, Highway 49 Landfill at Highway 49 and Pharr Mill Road, or a private hauler may be contacted for removal.
- Loose items such as insulation, sheet rock & shingles must be contained in CLEAR bags or boxes weighing less than 35 lbs. each.
- Carpet and padding should be rolled and tied and must not be longer than 6ft and must not weigh more than 75lbs.
- Items such as lumber (stacked, no longer than 6' in length and no nails), doors, plywood, windows (tape glass, please), floor covering, sheet rock, etc. may be scheduled for collection on your garbage day.
UNACCEPTABLE ITEMS INCLUDE: Gas and propane tanks, asbestos insulation, dirt, concrete, bricks and rock, dirt, stumps, any yard waste generated by commercial tree services, arborists or foresters and loose broken glass cannot be collected. Residents are responsible for larger quantities.
ROLL OUT AND RECYCLING CONTAINER
A 95-gallon roll out cart and a recycling container are provided at no charge to residents of the City of Concord. These containers remain the property of the City. Place cart at the curb with handles facing away from the street. Additional roll out carts are available for a monthly charge, on a contract basis.
Additional recycling containers are available at no cost to residents.
